"Ezhilarasi's mother thrilled...

Ezhilarasi (Std.2) of Ammayarkuppam hardly knew letters or numbers when she joined the Eureka center in July. Her father is an alcoholic and her mother’s daily wage income has to take care of the family’s needs.

Ezhilarasi's mother was thrilled to receive the Eureka progress card which showed that Ezhilarasi could now read sentences as well as do subtraction and addition.

 
Kumaresan, reads Tamil fluently...

Kumaresan (Std. 4) lives with his grandmother in Melpadi village of Sholinghur block. 5 months ago, he knew to read a few Tamil words and to identify some numbers.

Now he reads Tamil fluently, has started doing division problems and knows some English words too. Great going Kumerasan!

 
Now Kanna can read words...

Kanna is a young boy in Vandavasi who has been attending our Eureka center for the past 8 months. When he first came to our class, he did not know to read letters. He could not write anything at all. His father Siva, a farmer, got worried about it and admitted him in the Eureka center. Now Kanna can read words, do simple additions and even tell the names of colors in English. Seeing his progress, his father has now enrolled his sister, Lokanayaki (Std. 4) also in our center. Their mother says that when it comes to education, every penny is well spent as long as their children are able to learn. The children love the Eureka center and have even composed a small chant, "We will go to school in the mornings... And then to the Eureka center in the evenings!"

 
"I love coming to Eureka Center. I want to become a doctor" - Monisha

Monisha (Std.4), studying in Uppilliapuram Adi Dravida Primary school, is a very bright child. She reads fluently, and has read several of our story cards. She is also very good at Math and has now learnt some English words also in our Eureka Center. She belongs to a very poor family. Her father left the family some years ago and her mother manages to make ends meet by working as a daily-wage laborer. She has 4 brothers. They all live in their grandmother’s house. Monisha is very happy to attend the Eureka Center. She says “I love coming to this class. I get to use all the colorful cards here and I have found many new friends too! I want to study very well so that I can become a doctor and take good care of my mother”.

 
Govt. School Teachers appreciate Eureka Teacher Suvidha

Suvidha is an extremely motivated Eureka Teacher in Maruthadu village, Vandavasi Block. She loves teaching and conducts classes with zeal. She tracks children’s skills periodically and spends a lot of time to give attention to the weakest students. When Janakiraman (Std.5) joined her Eureka center 8 months back, he only knew alphabets in Tamil. Now he is able to read words and sentences. He is able to do addition, subtraction and multiplication as well. He also reads words in English. The school teachers of the local Govt. school are amazed at his progress and have appreciated the efforts of the Eureka Teacher in improving the skills of children of that village.

 
Dilli Babu wants his sister to attend Eureka SuperKidz Classes too!

Dilli Babu is enrolled in the Eureka Center in Kalankuthu village of Vandavasi block. He likes his Eureka Teacher Sumathi a lot and has been regularly attending our center. Since he joined the center, he has made a lot of improvement in reading and Math. He has been pestering his parents to send his younger sister Deepika (Std.1) also to the Eureka Center. His parents agreed to his persistent request and Deepika has also now joined our center. She now solves simple addition problems, reads words in Tamil and also knows many English words. Their parents are very happy and proud of their children’s progress.

 
6 year old Durai says, "To be a doctor, I must study well"

Durai Shankar studies in Std 1 in the Govt School at Deenampalayam Village, Coimbatore district. He cannot walk. His dad drives an auto while his mother is a daily wage labor. They had adopted Durai when he was a baby.

Durai is chirpy and talks fluently. He talks about his doctor visits and his hope that one day he can walk. He comes to the Eureka SuperKidz center every day. When asked why he comes to the center, he replied, “I want to be a doctor. So I must study well.”


His Eureka Teacher says, “Durai is a class topper and is very good in Tamil and Math. He is also very mischievous and full of fun. He loves math and keeps asking us to give him math problems to solve.”

 
Mohana sells dad's liquor bottle to get educated!

Mohana (Std 7) studies in Govt. Middle school in Cheyyur village, Kanchipuram District. She has 5 siblings. Her 2 older brothers and 2 older sisters had both dropped out of primary school. Her younger sister is studying in Std 4. Her father is a construction worker and is addicted to alcohol.

Although Mohana is in Std 7 she is unable to even recognize letters and numbers. She says that all the children in her school make fun of her calling her "makku" (dullard). When the Eureka SuperKidz center started in her village, Mohana joined the center. She was very attached to her Eureka Teacher Sheela, as Sheela encouraged her and helped her individually after the other children left.

When Mohana asked her father for Rs. 25 to pay the ‘fees’, her father told her to stop going to the center. Mohana did not want to tell her teacher that she did not have money to pay the monthly fee. So Mohana and her sister collected their father's liquor bottles and sold them for Rs. 25 and gave it to her teacher!

 
Superkidz children overcome their handicap to learn

Karthik, Mohan and Prashanth are brothers. They live in H. Settipalli village. They are studying in the local Govt. Primary School. Their father works in a hotel.

All 3 children are hearing impaired from birth. They cannot speak coherently either. Their father has consulted many ENT doctors but no cure has been possible. Because of this disadvantage, they learn much slower than other children.

Their father enrolled them in our Superkidz center in the hope that the Eureka Teacher Anand will be able to help them. For the past few months, Anand has been spending time every day, teaching them after other children leave. He speaks to them loudly and slowly and also writes all the instructions on the board. Anand also teaches them simple Science experiments once a week.

Mohan and Prashant have now started speaking. They speak very slowly but their father is very glad that they have made a start. They are now trying to learn to read simple Tamil words. When we visited, they even tried to speak to us in English by saying simple English words that they had learnt in our center!

 
Tamilselvan dreams of becoming a policeman to fight crime in his village

Tamilselvan studies in the 5th Std. in P.N.Palayam village. His father is a farmer. He has a younger sister studying in the 1st Std. Tamilselvan is an enthusiastic kid, always wanting to learn more. As soon as the school bell rings, he runs back home and immediately gets ready to come to our Superkidz center. When asked what he wants to be when he grows up, he smiles brightly and says “Police!” Since there is a lot of theft in his village, he says he wants to “speak in English, go to college, be a big Police officer and save my village from these robbers”. Tamilselvan has already planned to pay his college fees by working part-time after college hours. He loves learning new English words and Math at our Superkidz center. He even helps younger children in the class to learn to read. Tamilselvan is a determined child, striving to achieve his dreams.

 
Varalakshmi shares her experience...
Eureka Teacher Varalakshmi of Kallakurikkai, loves to teach and has completed diploma in Teacher Training. She has also worked with special children. She says, “I think the activities and materials in our center are really good. I have seen so many children improving in skills over the last few months, and now I am confident that I can get every child to learn well.”

Suresh of Kurichi, aged 8, Std 4, was unable to even read words when he joined the centre. He was initially very shy and diffident. But slowly he got attracted to the learning materials.
